As part of St Mary’s continued commitment to Diversity and Mutual Understanding (DMU) and our mission to develop an inclusive learning environment, we are delighted to welcome Saphara – Be the Change to the College every April.

This inspiring three-day programme, titled Newcomer Welcome Week, is a collaborative initiative involving students and staff from St Mary’s and Stranmillis University Colleges. Led by Saphara, the programme promotes community engagement, active citizenship and inter-school partnership. It will include a dynamic schedule of workshops and interactive activities, culminating in a celebration event with pupils from Fane Street Primary School and St Paul’s Primary School.

Saphara Newcomer Welcome event

The Newcomer Welcome Event is a highlight of the Saphara Be the Change Colleges programme. Dr Christine Burnett, CEO and Founder of Saphara, explains more about the opportunities the programme affords,

“The Be the Change Colleges programme provides unique opportunities for student teachers at Stranmillis and St Mary’s University Colleges to enhance their professional skills and gain vital collaborative experience in working with marginalised children both in Northern Ireland and in India.”

Throughout the programme, student teachers gain practical experience addressing the unique challenges faced by marginalised children. It is transformative for both the pupils and the educators involved, as they learn how to create safe and inclusive classroom environments.

In April, twelve third-year students from Stranmillis and St Mary’s will also broaden their skills on the annual Saphara India expedition, where they will teach marginalised children in partner schools, furthering their commitment to education for change. This international experience offers student teachers the opportunity to see firsthand the challenges faced by children in another setting, inspiring them to foster inclusion and support throughout their future teaching careers.
